In 1988, French director Luc Besson chose Amorgos as one of the main settings for his subsequently renowned film The Big Blue.
Many years have passed since then and Amorgos is still experiencing the success of this film which attracts thousands of visitors every year.
In the interim, the wild landscape with the high peaks and the deep blue waters did not attract the attention of film or television producers, until something changed two years ago!
In the spring of 2020, the film crew of the German production “Tochter” arrived at the port of Aegiali, with the purpose of carrying out a major part of the shooting of the film on the island.
Although we were all pretty numb, as we were at the beginning of the pandemic, everything worked out smoothly in the end and the shooting was completed without problems.
The film, mainly shot in Aegiali, had also scenes in Italy and Germany, and has already screened in major film festivals, coming soon to cinemas .
In 2021 the island of Amorgos was to become the central setting for two more very important productions.
In June, the Spanish clothing design and manufacturing firm MANGO, as part of its new advertising campaign, chose the Mediterranean to showcase its collection.
And of course, again, at the heart of the one-week shooting was Amorgos, with scenes mainly in Katapola, although shooting took place all over the island.
And while the wildly successful tourist season of 2021 was coming to an end, a leading French-Greek film production called CYCLADES arrived to film on the favorite island of the big blue.
Leading actors in the cast such as Laure Calamy, Olivia Côte and Kristin Scott Thomas filled the alleys of Amorgos with their brilliance.
The shooting in Amorgos lasted for two weeks, followed by filming in Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos and then back to France.
The film is expected to hit theaters in January 2023.
In all those productions, the residents of Amorgos played as extras, but most importantly they showed their hospitality, helping with every means possible so that the end result is perfect.
And of course, through all this, not only Amorgos but Greece as a whole was given prominence, a country which in recent years is attracting more and more successful productions.
Following the way which Luc Besson paved 33 years ago, Amorgos, with its natural beauty, remains the ideal place to spotlight all the top international productions.
